Most construction companies think GovCon is about the work. It's not. It's about the rules. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) is 2,000+ pages of legal spaghetti — and every single bid you submit has strings attached to it. Don’t know Davis-Bacon wages? That’s a problem. Didn’t read the part about performance bonds or Buy American clauses? That’s a bigger problem. Never heard of LPTA, RFP vs. IFB, or set-aside thresholds? You’re not even in the game. Government work isn’t complicated once you learn the language.
However, it is unforgiving if you don’t. And here's the thing: once you do know the rules, you gain a massive edge over 90% of your competitors. The profitable businesses? They don’t “wing it.” They systematize FAR compliance, delegate document review, and pre-bake government rules into their processes. You don’t need a law degree, but you do need awareness. The game has rules. Learn them, and you stop losing on technicalities. If you want help learning about the things in this article you didn't know, send me a message or book a call with me.
